Group
This research group, founded in 1997, is actually formed by senior researchers Luis Sarandeses, José Pérez Sestelo and Montserrat Martínez. Along the years an increasing number of PhD (11 Doctoral Thesis), Master and undergraduate students in Chemistry have been part of this group. Mostly, the research topics have been related with the synthesis of bioactive products, and the development of novel methodologies in organic synthesis. This group is world-reference in organometallic chemistry using indium.

Principal Investigators

Luis Sarandeses

Luis Alberto Sarandeses was born in Lugo, Spain, in 1963. He studied chemistry at the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain and obtained his Ph.D. under the supervision of Profs. L. Castedo and A. Mouriño (1989, Excellent Award). After a postdoctoral stay at the University Joseph Fourier de Grenoble, France, with Dr. J.-L. Luche (1990–1991) he joined the University of A Coruña, Spain, as assistant professor, where he became full professor in 2009. His research interests are focused on the utilization of transition metals in organic synthesis and in the synthesis of natural products and pharmacologically active compounds.

José Pérez Sestelo

José Pérez Sestelo graduated in Chemistry at the University of Santiago de Compostela (1989) where he got his Ph.D. degree in 1994 (Cum laude) under the supervision of Profs. A. Mouriño and L. Castedo. After postdoctoral studies at the University of Pennsylvania under supervision of Prof. Amos B. Smith III, and Boston College with Prof. T. Ross Kelly, he joined at the University of A Coruña in 1997 as postdoctoral researcher (MEC). Assistant professor during 1998-2003 and Associate professor from 2003 to 2018, he is now full Professor in Organic Chemistry. His current research interests are focused on indium chemistry, transition metal-catalyzed reactions in organic synthesis and to the synthesis of biologically active compounds.

Montserrat Martínez

Montserrat Martínez studied Chemistry at the University of Santiago de Compostela where she got the Ph.D. degree in Chemistry in 2000 (Cum laude). She spent two years in Prof. Dieter Hoppe´s group at the University of Muenster as a MEC fellow. In 2005 she joined the research group of Prof. Luis Sarandeses and Prof. José Pérez Sestelo as Isidro Parga Pondal fellow. She is Associate Professor since 2012. Her current research interests include indium organometallics in cross-coupling reactions and indium(III) catalysis.

Postdoctoral research associate

Lorena Alonso Marañón

Lorena Alonso-Marañón studied Chemistry at the University of A Coruña where she got her Ph.D. degree in 2018 under the supervision of Prof. J. Pérez Sestelo and Prof. M. Montserrat Martínez. Her thesis was focused on indium(III) catalysis, particularly hydroarylation and hydroalkoxylation reactions of alkynes.
After a postdoctoral stay at the Queen Mary University of London in the group of Dr. Christian Nielsen working on the synthesis of dopants for OFETs, she then joined Domainex, a biotech company based in Cambridge, UK.
In 2024, Lorena joined our group as postdoctoral research associate studying the applications of indium(III) in organic chemistry.
